Visual Analysis of Time-Oriented Data with Tableau

In-class exercise 8 uses Tableau to build three time-oriented views. Each view is published to Tableau Public and embedded below. The three views are a control chart, a slopegraph and a trend-and-cycle view.

Control Chart for Sales by Category

Tableau is used to plot a control chart of sales by category. A control chart tracks a measure over time against a centre line with upper and lower control limits, which helps separate ordinary variation from unusual movements that may need a closer look.

Tableau is used to plot a slopegraph. A slopegraph connects two points in time with a straight line for each category, which makes increases, decreases and changes in rank easy to read at a glance.

Tableau is used to plot an arrival trend and cycle view. The view shows how a measure moves over time and how it repeats across a regular cycle such as the months of the year, which exposes both the long-run trend and the seasonal pattern.
